Old Salem Prison – A project in the works.
June 15, 2008
Old Salem Prison, Bridge Street, Salem, MA, originally uploaded by sagarmohan.
“The original jail building, constructed in 1813, with a major addition by Gridley J. F. Bryant in 1884, will contain 17 two-bedroom, two-bath condos, restaurant; the jail keeper’s house, possibly by Samuel McIntire, will be converted to three private entry homes; the carriage house will host single unit and exhibit space; and the new building will house eight two-bedroom, two-bath duplex homes. The original complex and the new structure will front onto a landscaped courtyard with view corridors terminating at the original entries to the Jail and Jail Keepers House.”

Any recent news on the progress of the Old Salem Jail? Have they even begun? Just wondering, with the state of the economy, how the plans/workings are coming along. I live in Wisconsin and plan to move to Salem within 3 to 5 years. Been keeping my eye on this project, as I’d LOVE to live there!

Work hasn’t started on the project yet from what I can see. Perhaps once the weather gets better. It is going to be a nice place to live. If you’re planning to move here, you’ll be happy to know that there are quite a few projects going on that are adding to the city’s charm. The News Block building is coming up quite nicely as well.
I’ll see what I can find on the actual project’s future, given the state of the economy. I think Salem developers are still doing quite well.
